About The Role

TPXimpact is delivering huge impact to a range of clients across UK public sector, and with some exciting new wins we need to grow rapidly to meet our demand.

We’re looking for a senior technical leader to support the surge growth of our Software Engineering practice by ensuring we hire engineers who meet the highest standards — technically, architecturally, and interpersonally.

This isn’t a recruiter role, but a high-trust position for someone who has built and scaled teams before, understands what good looks like, and can support us in making confident, consistent hiring decisions.

Working closely with the Head of Software Engineering, you’ll lead technical assessments, shape interview processes, and coach others in the practice to apply high-quality, values-aligned evaluation. Your insight will help us grow faster — without compromising on quality or culture.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth technical assessments and code reviews for engineering candidates.

  • Lead technical interviews focused on software design, coding quality, systems thinking, and consultancy skills.

  • Develop and maintain high-quality assessment frameworks and rubrics.

  • Ensure assessment processes are fair, inclusive, and consistently applied across interviewers.

  • Act as a trusted decision-maker in hiring panels, helping to shape the future of the practice.

  • Collaborate with Talent Acquisition and Engineering leadership to improve hiring efficiency.

  • Coach and support interviewers across the practice to raise assessment quality and confidence.

  • Monitor and advise on the effectiveness of technical testing environments and candidate experience.

  • Champion the importance of engineering craft and a consultancy mindset in all hiring decisions.

  • Identify and help remove process bottlenecks that impact assessment throughput.

  • Stay current with industry trends in technical hiring and bring insights into the team.

  •  Contribute to a culture of technical excellence and values-led hiring.

Dimensions

Budget: N/A

Headcount: 0 (but responsible for the technical evaluation of multiple candidates)

Complexity:

  • Apply technical and consultancy experience to assess high-calibre candidates in a fast-moving hiring environment. This will involve profile screening, conducting interviews, evaluating code tests, and providing recommendations to the Head of Software Engineering for the final hiring decision.

  • Guide and develop robust assessment processes across multiple engineering disciplines and hiring teams.

  • Influence strategic hiring conversations and help remove bottlenecks in the assessment throughput process.

  • Operate with high autonomy and trust, balancing quality, candidate experience, and hiring velocity.

Internal/External Interactions:

  • Collaborate regularly with Engineering Leads, Talent Acquisition, and Hiring Managers.

  • Represent the practice in candidate interviews and provide clear, actionable feedback to stakeholders.

Strategic Timeframe:

  • Immediate to mid-term, supporting the scaling of the Software Engineering practice in line with strategic growth plans.

About You

Professional knowledge and experience

Essential:

  • Significant hands-on experience as a Senior, Lead, or Principal Engineer in modern full-stack environments (e.g., .NET, React, Java, Python).

  • Proven track record of scaling teams and making high-quality technical hiring decisions.

  • Deep knowledge of software architecture, clean code principles, and maintainable systems.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), CI/CD pipelines, and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Comfortable leading interviews and assessing both technical depth and soft skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience in consultancy or client-facing environments.

  • Prior involvement in designing or running large-scale technical assessment processes.

  • Familiarity with inclusive hiring practices and building diverse teams.

Skills

  • Technical Assessment & Evaluation:

    • Deep expertise in reviewing code and evaluating architecture, design patterns, and problem-solving approaches.

    • Consistent and objective application of scoring frameworks and rubrics.

    • Ability to assess candidate potential, not just experience.

  • Collaboration & Coaching:

    • Ability to guide and mentor others in conducting high-quality technical interviews.

    • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with hiring teams and talent functions.

  • Strategic Hiring Support:

    • Understanding of scaling challenges and how technical assessments influence long-term delivery capability.

    • Experience in introducing improvements to increase hiring efficiency while maintaining quality.

  • Consultancy & Communication:

    • Skilled in evaluating candidates’ communication, judgment, and team-fit — especially in a consulting context.

    • Ability to clearly articulate assessment decisions to stakeholders and candidates.
