About The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Design Researcher to be responsible for designing high quality research, and leading design research work with our clients across digital and non-digital channels. This includes everything from defining the research objectives to using the most appropriate exploratory, generative, evaluative and participatory methods, even customising your own, to develop actionable insights and measures of success for design solutions. 

You’ll work in multidisciplinary teams and/or with policy specialists to facilitate a deep understanding of the people and communities that use services and the organisations that deliver them.  

We’re looking for people who have a high level of curiosity to learn from a spectrum of perspectives and want to create a positive impact through their work. We are also looking for people who can help expand our research practices at TPXimpact into methodologies such as Place-Based and Future Casting, working with the Head of Design Research to set, maintain and support standards. 
What you’ll do - As a Senior Design Researcher at TPXimpact, you will be:
  • Leading design research work with clients, providing strategic support to embed research and human centred design approaches into agile ways of working.
  • Designing and planning research: including problem framing, sample design, recruitment, screeners, field guides and process management.
  • Conducting  research using a variety of methods, from discovery to evaluative research, with individual users, staff or stakeholders to understand people, behaviour, context, culture and ideas, and to help improve and iterate products and services.
  • Conducting participatory and community research to support community organising and action. Developing relationships with organisations and individuals to be part of a bigger network of assets, strengths and partnerships.
  • Creating actionable research insights, using analysis and synthesis methods, linking qualitative to quantitative data and thinking about systems-level and behavioural patterns and frameworks to develop significant insights.
  • Working with teams to ensure robust impact measurement and theories of change throughout a design process, making sure solutions meet the needs of users and stakeholder outcomes.
  • Communicating research: ensuring research findings are compelling, relevant, impactful and actionable for design, through a variety of formats such as insights, decks, white papers, stories, videos, exhibits, etc.
  • Identifying opportunity areas and bringing people together through research: enabling teams to contextualise, refine and prioritise concepts and requirements. Building shared understanding and knowledge that can be referred to throughout a design process.
  • Mentoring and capability transfer: guiding more junior TPXimpact and client researchers and practice sharing across the organisation and with client teams. 
  • Advocating for how TPXimpact adopts best practises for design research across the organisation and on all client projects.
  • Working with the Head of Design Research to help build and contribute to the design research community of practice at TPXimpact, and make sure good user research principles are embedded throughout all the work we do.

About You

Essential skills and experience - To succeed in this role, you will need: 
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and delivering high quality design research work at a senior level in complex environments.
  • Demonstrable experience of conducting research using a variety of methods with users, staff and stakeholders - culminating in a sound ability to scope a research process, lead fieldwork and conduct interviews.
  • Demonstrable experience designing and advocating for responsible research by considering ethical, safeguarding, inclusive and accessibility factors throughout.
  • Demonstrable experience in connecting different sources of primary and secondary insight to provide the most relevant information.
  • The ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, balancing internal business priorities with external delivery and work on client projects
  • To be willing to travel in the UK to work with our clients for the purposes of project delivery and prepared to stay overnight on occasion if required (subject to Covid restrictions).
You don’t need to have experience in central or local government to work with us – although it is useful if you do – but it’s important that you’ve worked on some reasonably complex user-facing services.
Desirable skills and experience - We’re keen to talk to you if you also have:
  • Experience leading design research strategy work, embedding user research processes and building capabilities in a team or organisation.
  • Experience working as a user researcher in a Government department, central and local – this is highly desirable, but not essential. 
  • Experience researching future trends or for speculative design methods.
  • Experience researching within policy creation or changes - considering behavioural and social science.
  • Experience in creative storytelling - making an audience think/feel things they wouldn’t have otherwise.
  • Experience of working in an agency or consultancy.
