About The Role

Design Leads represent best practice through delivery of client work with other specialists in our Design, Technology and Change teams. 


Design Leads have a range of backgrounds in either Research, Service Design, Product and Interaction Design, or Content Design. They are not expected to have in-depth technical knowledge of every design discipline outside of their own experience, but are responsible for guiding our design and research approaches. They lead and support how teams use different design and research capabilities to deliver project outcomes.


Responsibilities  


As a Design Lead at TPXimpact, you will: 


  • Demonstrate and shape best practice as a design leader through delivery of client work

  • Provide design direction in collaboration with senior leaders as part of projects and programmes of work. You may also be asked to lead work and teams, or work independently as part of projects.

  • Manage and hold client relationships as part of accountability for delivery outcomes.

  • Support and coach other designers, researchers and teams to support delivery outcomes and individual development goals

  • Support Heads of Practice to develop our design practices inside TPXimpact. Including recruitment, skills development, knowledge management and sharing.

  • Support business development activities, including leading work for proposals and sales bids, and contributing to pitches and client presentations


About You

Essential 

 
  • A track record of leading and coaching others to create quality, impactful and user-centred outcomes, including in organisations and teams with low design maturity. 

  • Demonstrable experience of leading approaches to problem framing, working with teams to manage assumptions and/or work with hypotheses

  • Experience of work that includes prototyping and/or piloting using a mix of methods, supporting learning and insight throughout different stages of design and delivery

  • Able to create visual and engaging artefacts, and/or collaborate effectively with others to do so. 

  • Able to confidently to shape and communicate the story of our work and impact 

  • Able to challenge and support individuals and/or teams to be bold and ambitious, exploring what could be made possible.

  • Able to work with and manage ambiguity, build shared understanding, and help individuals and/or teams find clarity and direction.

  • Able to operate in a fast-paced environment, balancing internal business priorities with external delivery and work on client projects.

  • A track record of designing or supporting design of inclusive and accessible products and services


Desirable

 
  • An active interest or first hand experience in co-design, participatory approaches, and/or community organising and action 

  • Experience of working with technology and change specialists in technical and complex programmes of work

  • Experience of working in an agency or consultancy

  • Experience of designing and/or delivering research with central government, local government, health, or third sector organisations


Projects

 

Design Leads will be assigned to project work based on their individual skills and experiences. Different types of work might include:

  • Short specialist projects. For example, a Design Research Lead working on a 3-6 month discovery with hands-on work in a small team.

    • Providing specialist expertise and demonstrating best practice 

    • Quality assurance of other practitioners within TPX or within a client organisation 

  • UCD Capability Partnership. For example, a Service Design Lead and a Content Design Lead responsible for supporting emerging communities of practice including reviewing progression frameworks and providing training. 

  • Larger programmes of work. For example, a Design Lead responsible for a group of designers and researchers as well as providing hands-on delivery where required.

    • Guiding an overall design approach

    • Understanding different design roles and how they fit together in a multidisciplinary team to meet client needs and goals, including identifying gaps or where we might need more team members.
